GOG’s Gigs (Week Beginning 13/01/14)

Gigs in Glasgow This Week

Attention! This post is from a previous week. Please click here to view current Glasgow gig listings.

The first thing you should do before you read this is get yourself over to our coverage of this year’s Celtic Connections where you’ll find a run down of some of the more interesting acts taking to stages all across the city. One act that piece of coverage missed out on though, and which bears special attention, is Mull Historical Society, hitting The Arches on Friday for a special performance of debut album Loss. While a name like that might lead you to think of a quirky musical collective like The Polyphonic Spree, The Society is actually the brainchild of sole member Colin MacIntyre. Across four MHS albums, and one under his own name, MacIntyre has developed a unique take on pop, both ultra-sincere and undeniably catchy. He’s also a gifted live performer, whether performing on his own or, as is the case here, backed up by a band. Not to be missed.

Elsewhere King Tut’s New Year’s Revolution continues, and based on Twitter feedback it’s been something of a roaring success. Among the bands taking to the Tut’s stage this week are Deathcats, Life on Standby, Minor Delilah, and Sony and the Lost Soul Trains. You’re sure to find something to your taste amongst that lot. Oh and while you’re there you might as well try their own special King Tut’s lager.

Finally (or first if you’re doing things chronologically) Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks are taking to the stage at Oran Mor on Tuesday. Malkmus, as you might or might not know, is best known as the frontman of seminal 90’s band Pavement. While that band might be stuck firmly in nostalgia mode these days (for better or worse) The Jicks have just released their 6th album to solid, if not spectacular, reviews. Malkmus has a kind of easygoing, wry presence both on stage and on record and seems to have settled into a comfortable groove in his post-pavement career. Just the thing for a cold January evening.
