Street food’s really the in thing at the moment, with foodies everywhere casting off the pretense of the traditional restaurant to instead get their hands dirty with the likes of pulled pork and gourmet burgers (amongst many others). It’s so obvious why this kind of fast, delicious, fresh and high quality food is appealing in general but Glasgow, compared to other cities, has been a bit slow on the uptake. Maybe it’s due to the terrible weather, maybe there just hasn’t been a widespread enough passion for this kind of cooking here, but things are finally starting to change as more and more street food cafes and vendors pop up around the city. KILTR, a social media platform for anyone with a link to Scotland, hope to encourage this further with their upcoming “Feastival” at the Barras this weekend.
Running on both Saturday and Sunday, from 4pm to 11pm, the “Feastival” (I guess I’ll just keep using that word…) boasts a great deal of fantastic food from some of the top restaurants in the city, as well as a host of beers from popular local breweries and live music to top off the festivities. We spoke to Andy McColgan, Head of Culture at KILTR and one of the guys behind the whole event, who told us that this is “an event which celebrates food, music and culture and promotes collaboration and multiculturalism whilst creating a ‘street festival’ vibe in terms of atmosphere and price for the attendee.” He continued, “We at KILTR are all very passionate about good food and we love good music and the marriage of the two makes for an exiting and highly attractive proposition.”
The venue, Barras Art and Design Centre is an interesting one, and not somewhere we often see events like this pop up as most festivals much more often opt for the trendy West End or Merchant City. When asked what drew KILTR to the to this part of the city, Andy told us “It’s a great venue with real character in the heart of one of Glasgow’s most iconic and legendary areas. We couldn’t think of or find a better place for the Street Feastival event.” We couldn’t agree more!
Food stalls will be provided by a great selection of eateries from around the city, representing a host of different cuisines including, but not limited to, Stravaigin, The Finnieston, Hanoi Bike Shop as well as the likes of London-based Kimchi Cult. Live music is also on the bill, with entertainment from ESA, PVK, Harri, Andrew Divine, Racket Racket, David Barbarossa and Ewan Chambers over the course of the weekend, so there’s sure to be a lot going on. It’s free to get in too, but obviously you’ll pay for whatever you choose to devour. With all these amazing treats on offer, you’d better make sure your wallet’s well packed!
All in all this sounds like it’s going to be a great weekend and it’s always fantastic to see this kind of community-oriented showcase crop up around the city. Glasgow has so many fantastic independent establishments which often don’t get the recognition they deserve and this kind of event does a great job of promoting them. GOG will be there and we hope to see you too!
