Save the Children Christmas Jumper Day

Glasgow Christmas Jumper DayThis Friday, 13th December, Save the Children will hold its annual Christmas Jumper Day when everyone can help ‘make the world better with a sweater’ and wear their woollies in exchange for a £1 donation to raise money for its life saving work.

Glasgow Loves Christmas will be supporting the event by offering the first 100 people to turn up to Glasgow on Ice wearing their Christmas Jumpers a free 45 minute ice-skate this Friday lunchtime. Celebrations will take place in George Square between 12-2pm.

The charity began the initiative to save the Christmas Jumper from exile with great success. Over 7,000 people from schools and workplaces throughout Scotland donated £1 to wear their winter woollies on Christmas Jumper Day and this year, even more are expected to take part.

Support for Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day has been huge with celebrities posing in their festive woolies, including Lorraine Kelly, Susan Boyle, Ashley Jensen, Colin & Justin, Deacon Blue, The Proclaimers, Michelle McManus and Stephen Purdon from River City.

Myleene Klass, Samantha Cameron, Julie Walters, Lauren Laverne and Natasha Kaplinsky, amongst many others, have also dug out their finest Christmas knitwear, ready to wear in support of the campaign.

John Lewis is the official retail partner of Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day and has created bespoke jumpers, with £25 of the cost of each going to the charity.

Christmas Jumper Day GlasgowSave the Children Ambassador, Susan Boyle said:
“I’m supporting Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day because it’s fun and it’s all going to a very worthwhile cause, they do a lot of charitable work abroad and help underdeveloped countries and I’m very interested in those kinds of projects.

“If I could design a Christmas jumper it would probably have a reindeer on it, like the little fella called Rudolph, with a big flashing nose!”

Neil Mathers, Save the Children’s Head of Scotland, said:
“Scotland is known for its winter woolies and knitwear heritage, we’re the best country in the world to take part in Christmas Jumper Day! It will be great fun and there’ll be jumper activities happening all over the country to encourage everyone to participate. If you’re in Glasgow, get down to George Square for your free ice skate!”

“We’re encouraging people to dig out their traditional Christmas jumpers, decorate one or even knit one to wear on the day. Snowflakes, Santa, Rudolph or Fair Isle –we love them all. We hope thousands more in Scotland will take part again this year.”

Lorraine McIntosh of Deacon Blue commented:
“Christmas Jumper Day is a really fun way of raising money for vulnerable children around the world and it’s an excellent excuse to dig out those kitsch jumpers that usually lurk at the back of the wardrobe. We loved getting in the festive spirit and we hope lots of people across Scotland will join us by wearing their Christmas jumpers this Friday.”

Last year, over 600,000 people took part across the UK, raising over £370k.
