Megadeth (Tuesday 4th June, O2 Academy)
Metallica have disappeared up their own rear ends, Slayer are probably over following the sad death of Jeff Hanneman, and Anthrax are…well Anthrax. So your best bet for seeing one of the “Big Four” of thrash is probably this, and lets face it, Megadeth were always the best of the bunch anyway. Lacking the pomposity of Metallica or the self-aware controversy-baiting satanism of Slayer (again Anthrax are just…Anthrax) Megadeth are the self-deprecating good guy of the bunch. With two stone cold classics under their belt (Peace Sells… and Rust in Peace) the Dave Mustaine led band have been going steady ever since, and are due to drop their new LP Super Collider in a mere few days. If you’re a thrash fan you should probably go for the nostalgia factor alone. If you’re not, then what the hell have you been doing with your life?
Mudhoney/Meat Puppets/Metz (Wednesday 5th June, O2 ABC)
The O2 ABC hosts the ultimate grunge night (barring the unexpected resurrection of Nirvana) featuring two old hands and one brand new pretender to the throne. Metz have a better claim to it than many other pretenders. If you missed their extended support slot at the Fucked Up/Titus show last week (shame on you) then this is your chance to see them. If you were there then you know that these guys have the chops to become the leading grunge revivalists of our time. Loud, energetic, and irreverent, you have to catch these guys before they explode all over the place.
Not that the elder bands aren’t worth seeing. Whilst the Meat Puppets biggest claim to fame might be that time Kurt Cobain covered a few of their tunes, there was a time when they were serious alt-rock heavyweights. And while they might have disappeared into mediocrity in recent years you might be lucky enough to catch a few tunes off of their classic albums Meat Puppets II and Up On The Sun. As for Mudhoney, they have the distinction of having released Superfuzz Bigmuff, the EP that arguably invented the whole grunge genre. Surely that deserves your respect?
Stanley Odd/ Hector Bizerk (Saturday 8th June, Oran Mor)
If you at all suffer from the condition know as the “Scottish Cringe” then maybe this is a gig to avoid. On the other hand this might be just the thing to get you over said condition. Scottish hip-hop sounds like something of an oxymoron. Surely, you say to yourself, we Scots should stick to the miserable variety of pseudo-folk-rock we’re known for? Well, says Scottish hip-hop stars Stanley Odd and Hector Bizerk, screw that, we’re going to play the hip-hop heavyweights at their own game. Get beyond the initial cringe at the broad Scottish accents and underneath you’ll find some surprisingly eloquent, surprisingly awesome rhymes which will make you think that maybe, just maybe, there’s more to Scottish music than The Twilight Sad. Plus you’ll wonder just what the hell you were cringing at in the first place.
