Attention! This article is from a previous week, if you’re looking for gigs in Glasgow this week, please click here to navigate to our Music archives and select the top Music Monday post.
A weekly round up of the most interesting music events happening in Glasgow in the next 7 days, combined with a little something to listen to by many of the artists. Check back every Monday, or follow GOG on Twitter or Facebook to ensure you keep in the loop.
Monday (29/04)
Another quiet monday night with only World Party, aka pop-based solo project of erstwhile Waterboys member Karl Wallinger, providing musical entertainment at Oran Mor. Of course the usual Open Mic Night at Sleazy’s continues to offer free beer to performers so if you have a couple of tunes tucked away that you fancy showcasing to an accommodating crowd then this is your opportunity.
Tuesday (30/04)
Much hyped experimental hip-hop act Death Grips finally decide to grace Glasgow with their presence after pulling out of their last appearance for ‘creative’ reasons. Get along to SWG3 to see if they’re worth the wait. Alternatively indie-folksters Washington Irvine take to the stage at King Tut’s. They’ve toured with Frightened Rabbit in the past so that should give you some idea of what to expect.
Wednesday (01/05)
Portland psychedelic troupe Unknown Mortal Orchestra will be hitting the stage at King Tut’s tonight bringing their sunny, blissed out take on pop as they tour their new album II. Highly recommended if you fancy a chilled out Wednesday night. If not you might prefer to partake of the furious, life affirming anthems of misleadingly named metalcore act Hatebreed. Like a motivational seminar in a mosh-pit. Glorious!
Thursday (02/05)
More metal-core courtesy of Jack Sparrow quoting Bring Me the Horizon, who’ll be rocking the fuck out of their new album Sempiternal at the O2 ABC tonight. Or maybe you’d prefer Savages at SWG3. Seemingly inspired by late 70’s acts like Wire and Gang of Four their intense, psychedelic freak-outs are anchored by a stellar rhythm section. If none of that takes your fancy then local rockers Electrobuddha are launching their new album Evolution at Sleazy’s.
Friday (03/05)
Feeling masochistic? Pigeon Detectives are playing The Arches tonight. If not, then you might prefer longstanding local rockers The Primevals who’ll be playing The 13th Note, bringing with them their cross between Captain Beefheart and garage rock. Or, if you still haven’t had your fill of the pit, then Killswitch Engage are playing O2 ABC. It’s been a good week for metalcore fans eh? If none of this is for you, and if you feel like supporting a good cause, then set aside your weekend for the EFC Festival which will be taking over Maggie Mays, Ivory Blacks, and The Clutha Vaults to bring you a selection of music and comedy in aid of Yorkhill Children’s Foundation. Details of bands and venues here.
Saturday (04/05)
Saturdays mean prog-rock, right? Spock’s Beard play The Arches (even though it’s officially Star Wars day!) and will no doubt be showcasing their new album Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep. Expect plenty of solos and time signature changes. If that does nothing for you then Grammy Award-winning Men at Work frontman Colin Hay will be giving his latest solo album a bit of an airing at the O2 ABC. Or, if you prefer, you can head down to Stereo and check out some powerpop courtesy of local boys The Deadline Shakes.
Sunday (05/05)
Finishing off your week we have soul sensation of the moment Laura Mvula. She’ll be playing at the Oran Mor. Or, if you fancy something a bit different, Monster a Go-Go will be presenting their Intergalactic Ball tonight at Nice “N” Sleazys, featuring live bands, burlesque and go-go dancing. How can you resist? If none of that is for you then Mono will be hosting an evening of Kraftwerk interpretation in the guise of Kraftwerk Consolation Night, a touring night which started as a communal way for Kraftwerk fans who failed to get tickets to their last tour to commiserate.
