Peter Gabriel (Thursday | The Hydro | £30 | 7pm)
The Hydro’s first potentially good event happens on Thursday when Peter Gabriel takes to the stage. While there was a time when Gabriel’s idea of art was dressing up in silly costumes and jumping about with Genesis, he’s a lot more refined these days. Sadly he also seems to be in the ‘lazy’ era of his career, something which tends to afflict musicians of Gabriel’s age (though Bowie, Springsteen and McCartney might disagree). His two most recent releases were an album of cover songs and an album of old songs rerecorded with an orchestra (which seemed to be a trend for a while a few years ago, didn’t it Sting?). This tour, dubbed the ‘Back to Front Tour’ is one of those nostalgia-fests where Gabriel will perform his most famous album SO in its entirety. You know the one, it has Sledgehammer on it? It’s a great album and Gabriel will be joined by many of the same musicians that he toured with back in the day, so if you’ve yet to be to The Hydro this might be your best bet.
Blitzkrieg (Friday | The Garage | £18 | 7pm)
It’s a sad reality that you can never go back in time to that brief moment when The Ramones were at the top of their game (roughly between their eponymous debut and Rockets to Russia). What you can do, however, is get yourself down to The Garage for one of the more unique events to grace a Glasgow stage this year. Marky Ramone, the only living member of the longest running Ramones line-up, will be running through a collection of the band’s greatest hits. The best part of the whole thing, however, is that he’ll be joined by none other than Mr Party himself, Andrew WK, who’ll be taking over vocal duties, proving the fundamental rule of the universe that anything can be instantly made amazing with the inclusion of Andrew WK.
Deafheaven (Sunday | Stereo | £10 | 7pm)
I go on about Deafheaven a lot here, but for good reason. They are genuinely one of the most exciting bands around at the moment. In the space of a mere two albums they’ve taken the blueprint of black metal and evolved it into something truly exhilarating. New album Sunbather is an album of the year contender that I urge everyone to give a listen, even if metal isn’t usually your thing. Sunday marks the band’s 3rd Glasgow appearance in roughly a year, not bad in an age where more and more bands seem to be bypassing Scotland altogether. Last time they delivered a blistering show which just about managed to overcome the atmosphere-free surroundings of Ivory Blacks. This time they’re returning to the stage at Stereo, a venue far more suited to their unique brand of beauty and violence. If you’ve not seen them yet, now’s your chance!
