AlunaGeorge (Tuesday | The Arches | £13 | 7pm)
When AlunaGeorge, the union of Aluna Francis and George Reid (see what they did there?) played Nice ‘N’ Sleazy’s earlier in the year, there was a sense of catching a band on the cusp of greatness. Coming off the back of a string of incredible singles, but before the release of their debut album, the show felt like a premonition of the greatness that was sure to follow. Nominations for Brit Awards and BBC Sound of 2013 followed, and it seemed like AlunaGeorge were set to take over the world. It was perhaps inevitable then that debut album ‘Body Music’ would be a little disappointing; leaning far too heavily on those aforemetioned singles but failing to offer up any real substance in between. Still, it was a solid debut, and while they may not have set the world on fire in quite the same way as fellow buzz acts CHVRCHES and Jessie Ware, the future is still bright for the London duo. Taking their undeniable live charisma to the artful surroundings of the Arches they’re sure to deliver a crowd pleasing performance for the faithful.
Baroness/Royal Thunder (Sunday | Cathouse | £11 | 7pm)
Really it’s a wonder that we’re even getting the chance to see Baroness perform live after a bus crash last year left the band in rough shape. But broken bones and fractured vertebrae aren’t the kind of things to keep the Georgia band down, especially not after the critical success of their latest offering Yellow & Green, a sprawling double album that sees the band continue to experiment with their sound. Mixing straight up rockers like Take My Bones Away with instrumental passages that could almost be called ambient, the album shows that Baroness aren’t a band that are comfortable with generic distinctions or the limits of ‘true metal’. Instead Yellow & Green places them in that group of bands across metal who are driving the genre forward into a bright new future. Yet Baroness aren’t the only draw for this show. Support comes from the mighty Royal Thunder, whose epic debut album CVI mixes Southern Rock with good old fashioned Doom for stunning effect.
