Hello all. Given the events of Friday night it just doesn’t seem appropriate to do my usual snarky gig ‘recommendations,’ particularly given that the tragic events unfolded during a gig by local band Desperanza (who thankfully all made it safely out). That isn’t to say that there’s not a whole load of great music happening in our great city this week, and you’ll find the listings below as usual. However, I just want to take this opportunity to briefly pay tribute both to those who sadly lost their lives and also to those of the emergency services who have worked tirelessly since the incident. Of course, I also want to reflect the sentiments of the whole nation in recognising the bravery of those ordinary Glaswegians who ran towards the Clutha instead of away from it, and who thought nothing of their own safety in their efforts to pull people from the pub.
Needless to say it’s been a sombre weekend in Glasgow, and the week ahead will no doubt be equally sombre as more information is revealed and the circumstances surrounding the incident become clearer. But if any good has come out of all this it’s a reminder that Glasgow is a close-knit city, full of big hearted people who like to enjoy their lives to the fullest. So, while events like this are undoubtably shocking and tragic, we have to remember to carry on living our own lives, and what better tribute to those who died than getting out there and raising a glass to their memories in this, the greatest city in the world.
