Welcome my friends to another great week of music here in our fair city. It’s maybe not a classic week like last week, but there’s still plenty to offer. For example, the band behind the 2nd album bought by everyone I know, The Stereophonics, take to the stage of The Hydro for two nights, following in the footsteps of their idol Rod Stewart. While I have no idea what they’ve been up to in recent years, Performance and Cocktails will always have a special place in my heart, and I’m pretty sure they’ll play the hits from that.
If you’re more of a grizzled rock type then you’ve probably already got tickets to see the mighty Hawkwind on Thursday. One of the first ‘space rock’ bands, Hawkwind are one of those bands that will never die, instead contenting themselves with rocking out to their small, but dedicated fanbase. At the heavier end of the scale Bane bring their hardcore punk stylings to the Classic Grand on the same night. The real draw here, however, are Power Trip in the support slot. Priding themselves on their straight-forward, old-fashioned take on thrash, Manifest Decimation is one of the best heavy albums of the year.
The two undoubted highlights of the week are Savages, also at the Classic Grand, on Sunday and Stereo’s 6th ‘Re-Birthday’ Party on Friday. Savages have been making quite the name for themselves this past year, first with stunning debut album, and then with a string of intense performances, not least at Glastonbury, which left the crowd looking rather confused as to what they had just witnessed. Just remember not to take out your phone during their performance, or who knows what will happen to you. As for Stereo’s re-birthday party, the bar.venue has been at the centre of the Glasgow music scene for years, so what better way to celebrate its birthday than with some free food, free drink and a massive programme of performance, bands and DJs! Amongst those performing will be The Yawns, Ghana Sounds, Duncan Harvey, Figs In Wigs, Flore De Hoog, Afrodeesia, Julia Scott, Jamie and Rickie McNeill, Cosmic, Fucking Unlimited, Naked and more! Oh, and entry’s free too, as if it wasn’t good enough already.
