GOG’s Gigs (Week Beginning 24/02/14)

Gigs in Glasgow This WeekIf you’re at all like me, this week poses the question “what do I do now that the Winter Olympics has finished?” Well, my friend, why not take in a gig or two? Why not, for example, head along to the Oran Mor of Tuesday for Silver Mt. Zion, or, to be specific, Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, Efrim Menuck’s other band after Godspeed! You Black Emperor. A constantly evolving band which change not only their name (my personal favourite is Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-La-La Band with Choir), and personnel between albums, but also their musical approach. A more ‘fun’ band compared to Godspeed!’s beautiful apocalypse, their latest album Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light on Everything continues their recent forays into a more traditional rock sound, but with the usual experimental flourishes we’ve come to expect from this lot.

Elsewhere the Music and Film festival continues, with a selection of films and live performances championing the more interesting marriages between music and the moving image. Fans of The National can still check out their film Mistaken for Strangers on Tuesday and Wednesday, while fans of old school horror film soundtracks will no doubt want to head along to the Oran Mor to see those geniuses known as Goblin. Elsewhere in the fest The Arches plays host to Danny Brown, whose most recent album Old was a highlight of last year.

Finally, it feels like every week I’m writing about some mini-festival playing host to one or many of Glasgow’s ‘local legends’. This week is no different as those purveyors of “iconoclastic” beer BrewDog host their Beer Geek Brunch as SWG3, featuring local favourites such as Aidan Moffat and Miaoux Miaoux. From 12 till 6 you can enjoy the finest top craft beers from around the world as well as some top class “street food”. Oh and you can also “meet the brewer” if that’s you’re kind of thing. Then from 6 until 2am you can take in a selection of live bands including local favourites Miaoux Miaoux, Prides, and Aidan Moffat. This last one is probably best experienced if you’ve been drinking from 12 in the afternoon so really it’s a good match. Tickets for each event can be purchased separately, but there’s also a day ticket at the fairly reasonable price of £20. Just remember, drink responsibly!
