GOG’s Gigs (Week Beginning 16/12/13)

Glasgow Gig ListingsIt’s the week before Christmas which means just one thing, lots and lots of themed christmas events! Getting in ahead of the rest is Bloc’s Slowfest. While not technically Christmas themed (that comes next week when Bloc take over George Square) Slowfest does offer up a nice (free) three day long celebration of Scottish talent, including There Will be Fireworks, Rod Jones, Honeyblood and Pronto Mama. Just the thing if you’re looking to get away from the streets rammed with office nights out. If you’re looking for something a bit more energetic, however, then you might prefer to get down to The Note on Tuesday for their annual Bastard’s Xmas, featuring the metallic punk stylings of Eddy and the T-Bolts among others.

Come the weekend you have a couple of options. First up we have The Wee Chill’s Festive Weekender, featuring a plethora of exciting things to do in addition to the usual musical suspects like Admiral Fallow and Washington Irving. For example there will be a festive market (everyone loves those right?) and a cinema room, not to mention food courtesy of Street Food Cartel. However, if you’re feeling like there’s not been enough glam this festive season you might instead prefer the wonderfully named Xmas Xtravaglamza, featuring a whole host of tribute acts, running the gamut of all your favourite glam tinged bands like Bowie, Blondie, Slade and T-Rex.

Finally Pogues fans can breath a sigh of relief, safe in the knowledge that Shane McGowan has survived another year. Their sometimes annual December concerts have become something of a Christmas ritual for their legions of Glasgow fans, comfortingly predictable but as gloriously ramshackle as you would expect. That said, this year they’re shaking things up a bit, playing their most famous (and best) album Rum, Sodomy and The Lash in its entirety, but you should also expect the double whammy of Fairytale in New York and Fiesta to close out the show in traditional style.

Oh, and on a final note you might have heard about this little band called Black Sabbath? It might have been a while since they were all together in the (almost) original line-up, but new album 13 was an unexpected return to form, and, as someone put it to me the other day, you’re unlikely to get another chance to see them live, so it might just be worth shelling out and putting up with The Hydro.
