GOG’s Gigs (Week Beginning 10/02/14)

Attention! This post is from a previous week. Please click here to view current Glasgow gig listings.

Kicking things off in style this week we have Phoenix, the french band beloved of Sophia Coppola, hitting up the Barrowlands on Monday night. Impossibly stylish in that uniquely French way, the band haven’t really changed their sound all that much since debut album United. A brief foray into more experimental territory with 2009’s Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, also incidentally their best work, did nothing to dull their catchy approach to pop music. Latest album Bankrupt! takes them back to more familiar territory, but no worse for it. As reliably brilliant as ever it remains to be seen if they’ll repeat their drugged out appearance at Glastonbury, a show which climaxed with a health and safety nightmare as lead singer Thomas Mars surfed out into the crowd in order to scale one of the tentpoles holding up the venue. Great showmanship is guaranteed regardless.

Of course, this week also brings with it that most commercial of holidays, Valentines Day. While restaurants across the city will be pulling out all the stops to ensure couples a romantic experience, the attitude of the musical community seems decidedly more cynical. Take, for example, Kid Canaveral’s “Lumber Party” at Stereo, offering up an alternative valentines experience with the chance of picking up a ‘lumber’ at the end of the night. A combined gig and club night, special guests include Malcolm Middleton and Randolph’s Leap. Come on, what could be more romantic than the music of Malcolm Middleton?

Finally the week goes out on a low note as the Kerrang! tour descends on our fair city. Limp Bizkit are the headliners, leaving us all to wonder just what we’ve done to deserve this?
