GOG’s Gigs: Local Music This Week

Attention! This article is from a previous week, if you’re looking for gigs in Glasgow this week, please click here to navigate to our Music archives and select the top Music Monday post.

A weekly round up of the most interesting music events happening in Glasgow in the next 7 days, combined with a little something to listen to by many of the artists. Check back every Monday, or follow @getoutglasgow on Twitter to ensure you keep in the loop.

Monday (15/04)

Start your week with the perky pop punk stylings of Patent Pending, who’ll be playing the O2 ABC. Or, if you’re feeling a bit more mellow get yourself along to the 13th Note to catch post-rockers A Hundred Black Kites. For something completely different The Red Note Ensemble’s long running new music club Noisy Night returns to the Candleriggs Bar at the City Halls, bringing new music for Cello, Alto Flute, and Double Bass. An informal, free night of immediate and fresh music is promised for all.

Tuesday (16/04)

‘Hyper-sea shanty’ practitioners Trongate Rum Riots will be taking to the stage at The Note tonight , all eight of them. They’ll be bringing their unique brand of folk-punk to entertain your ears and get you jigging. Alternatively up-and-coming indie darlings Peace bring their self-described ‘music to fuck you in the heart’ to The Arches. How charming!

Wednesday (17/04)

Self described ‘avant-garage’ legends Pere Ubu take to the stage at Mono to showcase their new album The Lady From Shanghai, made under deliberately odd circumstances whereby each member recorded their part in isolation in an attempt to capture a kind of musical ‘Chinese whispers’. Whether this will translate to a live setting remains to be seen but is surely more than worth checking out. Alternatively San Diego progressive rock five-piece Astra will be doing their thing at King Tut’s. Expect lengthy, psychedelic jams with full on ethereal soundscapes.

Thursday (18/04)

Industrial legends KMFDM will be rocking Classic Grand tonight with their unique blend of techno and heavy metal, while over at the O2 ABC the heavily hyped Charli XCX will be showcasing her post-apocalyptic take on pop music. You’ll have to decide for yourself if the hype is justified. Down at the ABC’s older sibling, the Academy, Frank Turner will be riding that wave generated by his appearance at the Olympic opening ceremony with his live band The Sleeping Souls, while symphonic death metal outfit Hypocrisy will be making their only appearance outside of London over at Stereo.

Friday (19/04)

Once upon a time it seemed like The Fratellis might be the next Scottish superstars, then they just kind of fizzled out. Find out what they’ve been up to at The Barrowlands tonight. Most pretentious band name of the week goes to Belfast pop-rock trio And So I Watch You From Afar who’ll be stopping by the ABC to show off their new album. Last seen at the Glasgow Film Festival, multi-instrumentalist Serafina Steer will be performing her own live scores using her voice and a harp at the CCA.

Saturday (20/04)

What better way to spend your Saturday than at the multi-artform Outskirts Festival at Platform at The Bridge over in Easterhouse. Music will be coming courtesy of A Hawk and a Hacksaw, The Crying Lion and Frist Frugt alongside performance, art installations and poetry. If that doesn’t appeal then you might want to check out alternative veterans And You Will Know Us by The Trail of Dead who are back in Glasgow touring their new Pussy Riot-dedicated album Lost Songs. They’ll be at the (fairly) new SWG3.

Sunday (21/04)

Irritating indie-popsters The Feeling will be playing the Oran Mor tonight if that’s your kind of thing, though really you’d be getting yourself along to NWOBHM legends Saxon at the ABC. Alternatively The Wave Pictures begin their 3 night mini-residency at Mono where they’ll be playing a different set every night joined by a selection of stellar special guests. £6 a night or £15 all access.
