Gog’s Gigs: Local Music This Week

Attention! This article is from a previous week, if you’re looking for gigs in Glasgow this week, please click here to navigate to our Music archives and select the top Music Monday post.

A weekly round up of the most interesting music events happening in Glasgow in the next 7 days, combined with a little something to listen to by many of the artists. Check back every Monday, or follow @getoutglasgow on Twitter to ensure you keep in the loop.

Monday (08/04)

Not a hell of a lot going on tonight about town, but if you fancy checking out some local, unsung talent, get yourself down to The Glasgow Slow Club at Bar Bloc, or, if you fancy playing a bit of music yourself, why not pop along to the weekly Acoustic Open Mic Night with Gerry Lyons up at Nice ‘N’ Sleazy. Free beer for performers and who knows, maybe one day you’ll be featured on these hallowed pages.

Tuesday (09/04)

A veritable smorgasbord of variety tonight. If you are both middle aged and middle class you might enjoy some Il Divo playing alongside Katherine Jenkins. They’ll be classing up the SECC and bravely competing with its cavernous acoustics. Alternatively you could go the complete opposite way musically speaking and check out the incomparable Bob Log III at Mono, who’ll be doing his idiosyncratic punk/blues thing. Beta Band fans however will most likely want to find themselves at King Tut’s to see erstwhile member Steve Mason showcase his fine new album.

Wednesday (10/04)

Free metal tonight courtesy of Dutch doom-mongerers Starve, who bring their heavy-as-hell stoner/doom sound to Bloc. If you prefer your rock n’roll a bit more on the melodic side, you might want to check out Tyketto frontman Danny Vaughn as he brings his solo stuff to the stage at the O2 ABC. This guy can knock out an anthemic chorus like the best of them. Alternatively the Oran Mor is playing host to Fife-based legend Kenny Anderson, aka King Creosote. If this is more your thing then you’ll not be wanting to miss the Fence Records label showcase at the Oran Mor in June.

Thursday (11/04)

More free music courtesy of Bloc and the Ayrshire based Mechanical Smile, who describe themselves as “two guys and two girls combining rock, pop, and grunge to create their own melodic and pulsating sound that will blow you away.” Judge for yourself from 21:00 onwards. If you prefer your music with considerably more hype (perhaps not entirely unjustified) then you’ve no doubt already got tickets for James Blake at The Arches. Or for something completely different head along to The Art School for Swingfellas, a ten-piece big band act that boasts not one, but three saxophonists!

Friday (12/04)

Undoubted highlight of the week is Fang Island who bring “the sound of everyone high fiving” to Broadcast. Whether or not the new(ish) venue can contain their stadium sized sound remains to be seen, but expect a properly life affirming night regardless. If that doesn’t convince you then you might prefer Scottish legends Big Country instead, who’s song “In a Big Country” must surely be a shoe in for the new national anthem if/when Scotland gains independence. If none of that is quirky enough for you then Adam Green and Binki Shapiro will be showing off their new collaborative LP of 60’s inspired duets at The Arches. Or if you’re a metal fan, (and frankly who isn’t?), local stoner/groove specialists Bacchus Baracus are launching their new album tonight at The 13th Note.

Saturday (13/04)

More local metal today as the QMU at Glasgow Uni hosts North of the Wall, an all day celebration of Scottish metal headlined by the legendary NWOBHM band Holocaust. Joining them will be Glasgow blood-mettalers Achren and Aberdonian power metal practitioners Ascension, amongst many others. For something completely different head down to The Poetry Club for Neu! Reekie!, a night of avant-garde poetry, film and music featuring such luminaries as Alan Bisset, Kirsty Logan and Jesus, Baby! Or there’s James and Echo and The Bunnymen at the SECC if you fancy something a bit more vanilla.

Sunday (14/04)

Closing out the week we have the chirpy sounds of Kate Nash, sure to delight anyone who’s into that sort of thing. She’ll be playing The Oran Mor. If that doesn’t float your boat then maybe you might like to see the man David Fricke of Rolling Stone once called “one of the finest songwriters I have ever heard, Australian or otherwise.” Paul Kelly brings his unique musical take on his homeland to the Arches.
