Local charity Glasgow Bike Station is calling on people across the city to join its Bike Amnesty by donating their old and unused bikes and cycle equipment. Starting at the beginning of this week, as part of European Week for Waste Reduction, the charity hopes to collect 100 for refurbishment.
Donated bikes will then be sold on or donated to vulnerable children in the local area through the Bike Station’s Christmas Giveaway partnership with children’s charity, Action for Children Scotland.
Managing director of The Glasgow Bike Station, Gregory Chauvet says: “The more bikes we sell in the run up to Christmas, the more we will be able to donate to children in Glasgow. We want to give these children a good Christmas, as well as provide them with a means to a long lasting relationship with cycling and its social and environmental benefits.
“We heavily rely on donations from the public and have been overwhelmed by their generosity so far. An extra push in honour of the European Week for Waste Reduction will enable us to give as many children as possible an extra special Christmas this year.”
Grant McFarlane, fundraising manager at Action for Children Scotland, said: “We are really pleased to have teamed up with the Bike Station to get children and young people cycling. I would encourage people across Glasgow to take this opportunity to clear out their garages, sheds and anywhere else that unused bikes might be hiding – you could make a real difference to the families we support this Christmas.”
For every five refurbished adult bikes, ten refurbished kids bikes, or one new bike sold in the run up to Christmas, the Bike Station will donate one kid’s bike to Action for Children.
Everyone who donates a bike will receive a 20 per cent off voucher which they can use in the Bike Station shop on new bikes, new accessories and servicing. Its home collection service will run with extended hours in the coming week.
On Saturday, 23 November the store will host its Yule Ride Christmas Fayre, a fun family event with special offers, stalls, refreshments, and free bike skills and maintenance sessions. Running from 9am to 5pm, kids entertainer Eilidh will be there with her box bike to provide recycled arts and crafts and Bling Your Bike sessions for children. Santa will also make an appearance in his rickshaw.
