Christmas markets sure bring on the cheer, shopping gets us excited for gift swapping, and ice skating leaves us feeling like nimble (if a little achey) snow bunnies. But really if it’s cold, wet, windy, or eh, all of the three like we had yesterday, it’s a little more pleasant – and a whole lot safer – to get your festive fix, indoors. And while lots of bars are laying on Christmassy cocktails, carol singers and even St Nick himself to get punters into the Christmas spirit, I reckon all it takes to send Scrooge packing, is a wholesome, classic, Chrimbo film. So for your viewing pleasure, check out my DesignMyNight picks of where to watch Christmas films in Glasgow.
Eat Film @ Sloans
Tuesday night is normally Eat Film night at Sloans, but throughout December, there’s been such demand for the foodie film screenings, that the Grand Ballroom in the bar is opening its doors on Mondays and Wednesdays too. Welcoming punters with classics both on the screen and in the snacks cart, enjoy Mac ‘n’ Cheese, Chilli Nachos and Hot Dogs, along with festive flicks like Elf and Miracle on 34th Street. You’d best hurry though, these tickets are selling faster than Furbys.
Square Eyes Film Club @ Blythswood Square Hotel
If you’re sick of your average multiplex fodder; sticky chairs, greasy popcorn and super-sized sodas in a room of 200 people, then boy (or girl) do we have the movie watching experience for you. Hidden within the lavish Blythswood Square Hotel, this stunning townhouse boasts the most decadent cinema in the city. A small selection of bespoke tweed seating, bubbly on arrival and canapés throughout the movie ; this programme of festive favourites comes with a decidedly more grown up and glamorous feel. Okay, so it’s pricer than other picture houses, but hey, it’s Christmas. Treat yo’self.
Dinner and a Movie @ Grosvenor Cinema
Ashton Lane is more than a little bit lovely come Christmas time, so we don’t need much of an excuse to wander down here on a frosty night. But if we did, Christmas movies at the Grosvenor would be more than enough to lure us west this winter. Throughout December they’re inviting sentimental souls for Dinner & Movie, offering screenings of It’s A Wonderful Life along with eats from their delicious festive menu. And if that movie doesn’t leave you feeling as festive as a mince pie, well, then maybe you’re more Ebenezer than Elf.
So that’s me off to root out my cringiest jumper, add a few more baubles to the tree, and get my wine mulling on. But if you fancy a cosy night out rather than a cosy night in, head along to one of these festive flicks, the perfect Christmassy date night, alternative office party, or simply a sober session amid a drunken December. Happy Weekend!
