So it’s officially February. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and you’re going to have to act fast if you want to find a date. Now, I’m all for having a single-and-loving-it February 14th, but if you’re a keen romantic hoping to woo or be wooed over the next two weeks, I’m here for you too. So whether you’re after somebody that makes you laugh, or someone who makes you dinner, check out my DesignMyNight guide to where to bag your dream date in Glasgow.
GSOH…
A good sense of humour is important to all of us, so it’s imperative, that when you’re on the hunt for a honey, you look to bars where funny people might hang out. First stop has to be Vespbar, their 10 O’Clock comedy shows draw in comedians (and comediennes) from all over, just looking to get some lols. Jongleurs at The Mansion House is another comedy joint, where you might pick up a fellow laugh lover.
Enjoys long walks on the beach…
Now we might be a little bit away from the sea here in Glasgow, but that doesn’t mean we can’t pretend. Luckily Glasgow’s got a couple of beach bars that might just do the trick. The Tiki Bar is a blinding beach hut on Bath Street, if the potent tropical cocktails don’t get you mingling here, ‘nowt will. This one also has a great party vibe that makes for prime flirting while you wait for those drinks. Alternatively, head back to Mansion House for their very own tiki den, Kanaloa. Be adorned with a lei and sip from a tropical chest of gold, the perfect spot for beach combers to meet.
Person of means…
Okay, so no one likes to admit it, but a lot of us dream of being swept off our feet by some glamorous millionaire, wined, dined, and treated to a life of luxury. While I’m not condoning gold digging, if you are looking for someone with a little cashola in their pockets, here’s where you might find them. Rox is a Champagne bar, in a jewellery shop, where better to find someone to buy you diamonds than IN an actual diamond store? In keeping with the penchant for bubbly, Champagne Central, or the Moet & Chandon Roof Terrace at 29 Private Member’s Club, might equally come up trumps on your hunt for a Trump. If in doubt, head to the Corinthian Club and linger ‘round the casino tables, strike it lucky and you may come into some “new money”.
Great Dancer…
Now a great dancer means different things to different people. If you’re looking for someone who knows their way around a mean samba, then Boteco do Brasil or Arta are the places to find them. If you’d prefer something a little more seductive, then perhaps the Riding Room or Steampunk Café’s cabaret shows might be more up your street. Or if you simply want someone to tear a hole in the dancefloor with you, just pop along to Sub Club for house and techno or The Berkeley Suite for disco and ska and see who takes your fancy.
Loves to cook…
Glasgow boasts some awesome foodie hangouts, so you’ll be spoilt for choice in the kind of specimen you’ll find in these joints. First up are the nice Scottish eateries like Ubiquitous Chip, The Gannet, Arisaig and Stravaigin if you’re looking to spot some local-loving talent. For a burger buff, there are literally dozens of choices, but Burger Meats Bun, Lebowskis and Buddy’s Diner are among the finest, with Meat Bar or The Butchershop for more refined carnivores. If you fancy someone fishy, wade to Bar Gandolfi or the Finnieston, or if your future Valentine simply must be a veggie, Mono and Stereo are the places to find them.
Buff…
Again another one we’re not so proud of, but hey, some like it hot when it comes to their other halves. And lucky for them, beautiful people tend to flock together. The Shimmy Club, Cirque and Sugar Cube all appear to have the most attractive clientele in the city – conventionally speaking, of course – all glammed up and glossy haired. Likewise, perhaps try some sports bars attract gym flies, so hit up The Golf Lounge for some ripped romance. Or if (like me) your kind of hot involves more of a keg than a six pack, please see above, for burger bars and steak joints.
Good listener…
Now this one is really important. If you’re looking for someone in your life with a keen ear, Glasgow certainly is the place to find them. King Tut’s, Broadcast and Bar Bloc are the venues for indie and rock fans to fall in love. For bigger acts, try O2 ABC, SWG3, Barrowlands or The Arches. And if you’d prefer somebody a little more smooth and jazzy, Slouch or Bar Gumbo patrons, are sure to be right up your street.
So there you have it, no need to be single this V-day, head out on the hunt in one of Glasgow’s finest drinking dens and whatever your type, you’re sure to bump into a little beauty in these little beauties. And once you get on to actually get down to business – the business of making a date! – check out or nifty guide to Valentine’s Day in Glasgow.
