Bread Meats Bread Opens Doors On St Vincent Street

Bread Meats Bread Opening ReviewThe Glasgow street food scene is really thriving at the moment and Bread Meats Bread on St Vincent Street, the latest opening throwing their hat in the ring, officially opens its doors today after a long time in the making. We headed along to its launch party last night to see what all the fuss is about, and sample some of its wares.

As soon as you walk into Bread Meats Bread, you can see what they’re trying to do; floor to ceiling glass walls, an open kitchen, and a spacious, undivided seating area. The space itself is quite successful, it’s open-plan and a lot of pretty clean lines, but the materials used lend it a cosy kitchen/diner feel. We grabbed a seat against one of the impressive glass walls and had an excellent view right over the corner of the block.

Once seated, we were tended to by one of the many friendly staff members looking after people on the night. To drink was a selection of wines, and 3 American beers (Brooklyn, Sierra Nevada and Blue Moon). It remains to be seen whether or not they’ll offer up some more generic lagers as well upon opening, but for me this selection was surprisingly good, despite the lack of variety.

Having loosened up with a glass of wine each, it was time to try some food. Over the next hour we were presented with a selection of “tasters”, including their house burger, house hot dog and a pastrami on rye sandwich, as well as bowl of chunky fries with sriracha mayo. The highlight of all of this was undoubtedly the house hot dog, served simply in a brioche bun with a few fried onions. The meat (beef, in this case) was succulent, beautifully seasoned and just downright tasty. The burgers were enjoyable, although the apparently “spicy” one was anything but, and slathered with a lot of unnecessary tsatsiki with a view to cooling it down. It either needed a lot less tsatsiki or a lot more spice! The pastrami on rye was Stuart‘s favourite on the night, packing some sensational flavour in the tender, thinly sliced beef. I found it a bit on the dry side, but again, can’t fault the flavour.

Bread Meats Bread Review GlasgowWe caught up with both the bar manager and the owner (straight out of Kosovo, no less) to get an idea of what impact the restaurant was hoping to make in the already busy street food scene in the city. Both were visibly passionate about creating great quality food for Glasgow, with the best cuts of meat in their burgers, and the best quality ingredients in their rolls. I’m not going to say I haven’t heard this kind of thing in town a lot recently, but there’s definitely space for more, and the prices are really on point on this occasion. At around £5 or £6 a pop per burger, this place may find it easier to occupy the lunch market than some of their obvious competitors which charge a fair bit more for a similar quality of product.
