A preview of the Wimbledon Ladies Singles Tournament
The 2015 Wimbledon Tennis Championships get underway next month and the tournament is set to be most of the most exciting tennis events on the calendar. The women’s competition is set to feature the world’s best players as they attempt to win the grass court event. We take a look at the upcoming tournament and discuss some of the fancied candidates for the crown, while also taking a look at Britain’s number one Heather Watson and her chances of causing an upset and reaching the latter stages at the tournament.
Look no further than Serena Williams
Serena Williams is one of the leading candidates to win this year’s crown and it would be difficult to look any further than the world number one on current form. The American has won 20 matches in an incredible unbeaten run this year, and has won the ladies singles title five times in the past.
The 33-year-old hasn’t won the event since 2012 and she will be looking to reassert her dominance in the tennis world, and she is well priced to complete the Grand Slam and win all four majors this year. Williams has already won the 2015 Australian Open and will take some beating on the grass court. The American is a powerful player and will definitely expect to reach the latter stages of the competition.
Maria Sharapova could be a threat
Although Williams earned a convincing victory over the Russian at the Australian Open, Sharapova could be aiming for a second Wimbledon title this year. She won her maiden competition back in 2004 but has regained some form in recent months and will stand a very good chance of reaching the semi-finals at the very least. The 28-year-old has lost the last 16 matches against the world number one, but if she can avoid Williams in the draw then she will fancy her chances. If Sharapova plays at her very best, she will be difficult to beat and could be one of the standout performers in this year’s championship.
Britain’s hopes rest on Heather Watson
Britain’s female tennis players have been incredibly unlucky with injuries in recent years and they no longer have four women in the world’s top 100 competitiors. Heather Watson is currently the British number one and she is the main hope for the host nation after Laura Robson has struggled with long-term injury issues. Watson is in great form and has beaten some of the game’s top players in recent months – including world number 7 Agnieszka Radwanska in the Indian Wells Masters – and will be looking to continue her form in the grass court events throughout the summer. She will be well supported and this could help to raise her game and cause a few shocks in the competition.
